Motegi Racing Touge

Motegi is a wheel manufacturing company that specializes in race products.  Wheel designs are capable of applications in drag racing, road racing and drifting.  Motegi provides a lifetime structural warranty.

Their wheels are all street inspired designs.  You're probably familiar with seeing them on import cars.  They produce wheels that will fit on any make and model.

Motegi gets it's name from a city in Japan.  Motegi, Japan, is home of the Twin Ring Motegi racetrack.  The track was opened by Honda in 1997, and houses some of the nations largest racing events.

The MR2171 Touge by Motegi is a 19 inch rim with 4 lugs that will fit on most front wheel drive cars. It has five spokes and is painted black with a gloss clear coat finish & natural metalic accents.

The offset of the Motegi MR2171 is +40mm, which is ideal for front wheel drive cars. You'll get better traction out of your MR2171's due to its' 8 inch width.

You need specifications from your car and the new wheel and tires that you're installing to ensure a proper fit. Fit is important when you're installing a new wheel and tire package.

Find the clearance of your current setup. If you're looking at the Motegi Racing Touge 19" wheels, then you need to make sure that your vehicle will support them with the tires you choose installed.

Check your current setup. Measure the size of the wheel and the tire together. Take a tape measure and measure a line straight through the wheel and tire on the car from top to bottom.

Look at the wheel and tire combination that you're considering purchasing and see if they are the same. The Touge MR2171 is 19" in diameter. You can keep the diameter of the entire wheel/tire combination of the Motegi's around 25 inches or less.

There's a basic rule that says you should keep your wheel/tire setup no larger than 3 1/2 inches from stock. If you're not changing anything else but the wheels and tires, you may want to take that advice into consideration. You can go bigger, but be aware that you're going to want to consider brake upgrades for anything much larger than 3 1/2" over stock. The additional weight you add is what this rule is addressing. Often, with people who spend money on racing rims, other upgrades are either coming, or have already been installed, and the 3 1/2" rule is not crucial for them.

Offset and backspacing is another thing you'll hear when you're shopping for new tires and rim.  There are a few things you need to know to understand backspacing and offset.

Offset is the distance between the center of the wheel to the mounting surface where the lugs are connected.

Backspacing is the measure of the distance from the back of the wheel facing the a-arm to the mounting surface for the wheel.

Offset and backspacing are related, because as offset is increased positively, backspacing increases and vice versa.

What this means to you is this:  rims with positive offset have larger backspacing.  This can affect turning radius because of interference with the inner fender and a-arm.

Front wheel drive cars are designed to take advantage of positive offset rims.  This is because of the performance advantage they get from a positive offset.  If you're putting the Motegi MR2171's on a front wheel drive car, you'll be fine.

The pitch circle diameter is the measure, in millimeters, of distance between the bolt holes on the rim.  The Motegi MR2171's have a PDC of 114.3mm.  On a 4-lug wheel like this one, you can simply measure the distance between the centers of two of the bolt holes directly across from one another.  You can also look this up online.

PDC must match for rims to fit.  This is the most crucial measurement to ensure that your Motegi Touge rims will fit.

Also, don't be pulled in by the people at the tire shop to buy from them.  Though these shops prefer to make the sale themselves, they will still install the tires and wheels for you.  They will charge you for this service, but with the discounts you can find online, you're better off paying them for installation than letting them sell you the whole package.
